Services Provided by Intersect:

Intersect provides a range of services to children and youth under the age of 19.  The actual service provided depends on the age of the child, the presenting problem and the goals of therapy.

Intake:

An intake counselor will meet with the child and his/her parents, guardians, or caregivers.  The purpose of the meeting is to ensure a thorough understanding of the situation.  At the first meeting, service delivery options will be assessed.  All families who are accepted for service will be assigned a case manager who will become your contact person with the agency.  Because there is high demand for services, and limited resources, in many situations there will be a waiting period before your counselor will be able to start therapy.  Currently the wait list is approximately one to three months.

Crisis Assessment and Management:

Some emergency situations arise when a child or youth is threatening to hurt himself or herself or someone else.  Intersect staff may do an immediate risk assessment in appropriate circumstances.  Attention to ensure safety will be reviewed and some short-term follow-up may occur.  In some cases, the client will be referred to another program within Intersect or may be referred to other community programs.

Short Term Counselling:

The majority of clients will receive short-term counselling between six to eight sessions.  Parents, caregivers, and children may be involved in developing different ways of managing their situation.  The focus will be on identifying existing strengths in the child and family, developing goals for therapy and supporting the individual and family to actively work toward change.

Specialized Assessment:

After an assessment by a member of the counselling team is completed, recommendations for psychological and/or psychiatric assessment may be made.  These may be done on-site.  Recommendations for off-site assessment may also be facilitated.

Groups:

Throughout the year, a number of groups are offered.  They may include specific parenting groups related to children’s mental health issues, teens coping with depression, anger management and social skills groups.

Long Term Counselling:

In some cases, clients may continue counselling for several months due to concerns related to the mental health disorder, and/or environmental risks.
